When I was talking with a Microsoft tech which got me into this mess where I needed to Format C:/S (another LONG story), he said that was the file that determines what you download when you go to Windows Update but do not know if that is in fact true. You can open and read the file using Notepad and you will see every update you have done, the date, what it was, if it was successful or not, etc. There is a file (at least in Win 98 SE) named wuhistv3.log in C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate\ that keeps track of all Windows Updates you do. In terms of R2's comment above, I think you are referring to Windows Auto Update and how does it keep track of what you have "without sending any information to Microsoft."

Just for the heck of it, I just searched the registry for my OEM Office serial number and it did not find it. That's what threw me off in my first posting as I could not find the manual.īut LeSeaDoo was also totally correct that on OEM packaged Office, the serial number displayed in Help | About is the same as the CD-Key (NOT so in retail boxed product) and fortunately I had not done the Format C:/S so I could look and write it down first (whew).

As best I can sort it out, the CD-Key for retail boxed Office is indeed a group of squirly QX2D-Y3X7 type alphanumeric characters and is different from the serial number under Help | About.
